Music Monday : A Fresh Perspective on Laura Story’s song, “Grace.”
By: Debbie Waltz
Last week, I was quite open about the daily struggles I face with feelings of inadequacy, particularly when I’m sharing my personal testimony and marketing my book. While I can communicate, I”s to 15 m aware my CP can occasionally lead to misunderstandings. Lately, I’ve been feeling extremely self-conscious, which causes me to overthink and doubt my words and actions. In Ephesians 6:12, the Apostle Paul explains these battles are spiritual, not just physical. Why? The devil seeks any means necessary to divert us from fulfilling God’s purpose. As found in 2 Corinthians 11:1-3, Paul admonishes the Corinthian believers to maintain their spiritual integrity, instructing them to exercise caution regarding the individuals they permit influencing their understanding and beliefs.
Today, we require the same kind of careful judgment to stay focused amidst worldly distractions. As I’ve mentioned before, walking with the Lord is akin to any relationship. Engaging with God’s word daily is essential. This practice allows for a deepening understanding of Him and His nature. It enables us to make our own judgments about biblical truths instead of solely relying on secondhand information.
A profound commitment to the study of Scripture serves as a powerful tool for establishing our spiritual grounding in Jesus, thereby enabling us to focus our attention on our heavenly Father instead of becoming preoccupied with our earthly circumstances. After all, it’s our eternal state that is truly matters
We are reminded that our ultimate aim should be to glorify God through the application of the gifts and talents He has provided. In Corinthians 10:31 Paul discusses this Christian freedom like this. He says: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
Ephesians 6 continues to encourage us by stating that this struggle is not ours alone. We are assured of God’s presence, and He provides the necessary tools for our spiritual warfare. (verses 13-15) However, sometimes we fall back into our old ways. We feel God’s actions are too slow, leading us to believe our methods are superior to His.
However, the good news is that God always picks us up. Because of God’s perfect nature and His condemnation of sin, His blood effectively bestows His righteousness upon us. Logos puts it perfectly, “Grace functions within our judicial framework whereas mercy operates in the practical realm of human need.” Put another way, judgment is what we have earned, but God, demonstrating His mercy, settled the debt for us.
The song “Grace” by Laura Story offers a profound exploration into the genuine nature of the ongoing spiritual battles that Christians often encounter on their journey. This serves as a reminder that failure isn’t the conclusion of our narrative. God awaits our surrender. Then He will demonstrate his power in our lives. These particular lyrics offer a remarkably candid and insightful depiction of the ebb and flow, the give and take, inherent in one’s personal relationship with Jesus.
*Interesting side note: I wrote about this song in 2018- 8 years ago. Here’s my other observations if you want to compare notes
