Wisdom Wednesday: Learning by Example
by: Debbie
Happy anniversary, Mom And Dad
I know you were probably expecting to hear some words of wisdom from my dad today, but he’s off today, as it is my parents’ 54th anniversary. I have had the privilege of watching them in their love and commitment to one another as they continue to raise me despite the difficulties of having a disability. I know it hasn’t always been an easy road, letting go of specific dreams you had for me and creating new ones, knowing the right therapies to try and when to stop trying, advocating for me before I could advocate for myself. But even more important, you’ve learned when to hold on and when to let me go…
All of that had to take a toll on your marriage.
You’ve even illustrated a higher commitment and devotion to your marriage and God. This journey hasn’t always been the easiest for you-raising a son and then learning your daughter would need a lifetime of help because of her CP. Yet, despite it all, you held onto your faith- believing in the truth of God’s promises and trusting in His plans for your children. Not only is this the type of example Christians should provide to the outside world because marriage is a symbolic example of Christ’s commitment to The Church, but this is the relationship Jesus wants with each of us personally.
After all, remember what it says in I Corinthians 6: 19-20:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” (NIV)
Despite what the world would like us to believe, love is so much more than just a feeling. In fact, it is putting someone’s needs above your own. It involves caring for someone not despite their imperfections but because of them.
Isn’t that what Jesus did when he laid down his life for you and me?
Just a little food for thought this evening
Happy Anniversary to your folks!
Thanks. I appreciate it
