With January almost over, I have admitted to having difficulty readjusting to my routine after the holiday break. After spending time with family and friends, it’s only natural to find it difficult to go from a relaxed situation to a structured workplace. Though I don’t work in the “traditional” sense, I equate this blog and waiting to hear from my writing coach to work. It’s not always easy coming up with new and fresh perspectives to discuss here. Even so, I blog hoping that it shifts how people view the disabled community-going from a marginalized individual to a productive and active member of society.

Over the years, I have become convinced of the power of work to transform someone’s life; I have written about the intrinsic value of going off to work, putting in your time, and coming home only to do it again the next day. If we’re not careful, this label can subtly, yet powerfully, shape who we believe ourselves to be. When that’s stripped away, one is forced to reevaluate their purpose and meaning in the day-to-day.

As Christians, it’s important to remember where our value truly is. It’s hidden in Christ. Remember what it says in Colossians 3:1- 4: “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in glory.” (NIV)

It’s a daily struggle to remain a part of this world while not giving into our sinful tendencies. In John 17: 14- 19 Jesus attempts to voice the struggle they will have as His Disciples. He prays, “I have given them your word in the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may truly be sanctified.”

As humans, we are still susceptible to our sins, but we are not enslaved by them; as Romans 6:2-4 reminds us, “By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

It’s inevitable we will fall short. It’s a result of living in a fallen world. But take heart, even as the world crumbles around us and things change. God is our constant; He Will Not Change.

Let’s remember Hebrews 12:1-2: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ”
