Music Monday: “Sovereign Over Us” by Michael W. Smith

Our church has recently begun a sermon series called “The Lordship of Christ,” and it has been both encouraging and challenging. Each week, our pastors have been addressing topics that can be difficult or even controversial, but they are approaching each one through the truth of God’s Word rather than the opinions of our culture.
As Christians, we are called to recognize Jesus as Lord over every part of our lives—not just on Sundays, but in our homes, workplaces, relationships, and the decisions we make each day. Though we are part of this world, this world is not our home. Growing in biblical knowledge helps us develop discernment so that our choices are guided by Scripture and reflect God’s truth.
The song “Sovereign Over Us” by Michael W. Smith is a beautiful reminder that God is in control, even when life feels uncertain or the world around us seems divided. It points us back to the truth that God sees the bigger picture while we do not. His plans are higher than ours, just as Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Scripture also assures us that God never changes. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” and Malachi 3:6 says, “I the Lord do not change.” His love and faithfulness remain constant through every season.
My prayer is that we will continue to grow in our understanding of Scripture so that our lives reflect Christ more each day. When Jesus truly is Lord of our lives, it changes the way we think, speak, serve, and love others. Though we may not always understand what God is doing, may we trust His heart when we do not always see His hand in our lives. We can rest in the confidence that He sees the bigger picture, and He is sovereign over us.
