Music Monday: “Lord Over All” by Sonic Flood

A common Tauren Wells song reminds us that God plays a pivotal role in both the “Hills” and “valleys” of our lives. Never has this theme been more evident over the last week. On the one hand, I’m just coming off of celebrating Resurrection Sunday with my friends and family. More than just a simple holiday, this reminds me of the eternal hope I have by simply trusting in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I also just celebrated my forty-fifth birthday last week. Though we didn’t do anything fancy like going to Virginia Beach, I enjoyed just having a simple birthday at home and seeing in what ways God would make it special. I enjoyed being able to catch up with one of my college besties and seeing what’s been going on with her.

Amidst the chaos and complexity of recent events, I have unfortunately had to navigate through a series of unforeseen challenges. If you’ve followed me, you may have heard about my recent endeavor to find a new caregiver. Being disabled, I need someone to help me daily and when I lose a caregiver, we have a frantic search to find a new one. Though our current wonderful caregiver originally planned to decrease her hours in order to pursue a nursing degree, new circumstances have forced her to take some time away. This leaves us pretty much on our own. While we have placed advertisements on different online platforms and a had a couple of promising conversations, nothing has panned out so far. Sometimes it takes a long time find a new caregiver.

As disappointing as life can be, difficulties serve as a catalyst- pointing the way back to Jesus Christ for hope and strength. Though we live in a world marred by sin, it wasn’t always that way. When Eve was tempted by the serpent that she disobeyed God’s command of eating the forbidden fruit. In doing so, the reality of humanity’s nakedness was revealed; the beauty of God’s creation is now is less than “perfect or impure”. We saw ourselves as wise and all-knowing, going our own way: In God’s mercy, he sends His Only son to serve as the atoning sacrifice for all our sins both past and present so that none may perish (2 Peter 3:9).

Difficulties also remind us this place is not our home. 1 Chronicles 29:15 says, “We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.” (NIV) These serve as vital building blocks to shaping our character and learning to rely on God.

Indeed, He is Lord over all!
