Music Monday: “Knowing You (All I Once Held Dear),” by Graham Kendrick

If you’ve been following my blog recently, you probably realized a significant growth in my faith as I’ve read through the book of Revelation in my church Bible study and also have been reading through CS Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia for the first time in its entirety as an adult. Through these studies and readings, I have gained a new perspective on my faith and relationship with God. No longer do I believe in “blind” (childlike faith) but an active and growing one. Although we should maintain a sense of childlike wonder and innocence in our relationship, it is also vital that our connection remains dynamic, adapting and growing as we navigate the inevitable changes and transitions that life presents.

Just like any relationship, building a relationship with God takes work. We can’t just accept God’s gift of Eternal Life and expect nothing to change. (I mean, we could. But what good would that do?!) You see, God wants more than just our lives here on earth; he wants our hearts and our active trust in Him for everything.

Let’s consider what this means:

  • It means trusting Him if my bank account runs low – or I get cheated online.
  • It means trusting Him when a close friend dies.
  • It means Trusting Him to have our best interest at heart-even when circumstances don’t turn out like we planned.
  • It means believing in God to remain faithful to His promises- past, present and future.
  • It means believing God is in control of every circumstance and trusting in His Timing

This is what an active faith looks like.

Considering the theme of God’s supremacy in the Book of Hebrews, Graham Kendrick’s song “Knowing You” appears to be an exceptionally fitting and thematically appropriate choice for Music Monday.  It reminds us we should not put our faith in the things of this world. Matthew 6:19- 21 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where his neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (ESV)
