Faithful Friday: The 2 Thieves (First Film Directed by Dallas Jenkins)
by Debbie Waltz
Given that the highly anticipated “The Chosen: The Last Supper” premieres in a matter of weeks, I felt it would be timely to offer a concise assessment of a prior work by Dallas Jenkins. Although this film is only 27 minutes long, it provides a fascinating look at what could have happened before the crucifixion of the two thieves crucified with Jesus on the Friday before Passover. Though we know little about them, Jesus’ brief encounter with the thieves stands out as His ministry’s highlight, showcasing his exceptional grace and redemption. He extends the same to us, the underserved mercy and unearned favor that we do not deserve.
Although Luke chapter 23 primarily recounts the events culminating in Jesus’ crucifixion, a thorough analysis unveils a more profound and deeply moving portrayal of Jesus’ unwavering and extensive dedication to mankind. This is because “God so loved the world…” (John 3:16). His dedication to the well-being of others remained absolute even in the face of his approaching death; his own suffering paled in comparison to his concern for others. Jesus cared deeply not only for their physical well-being but also, and more importantly, for their eternal spiritual destiny, a choice between heaven and hell. As symbols of opposing spiritual viewpoints, the two thieves on the cross strikingly exemplify the stark contrast and inherent dichotomy between a posture of humble faith and one characterized by unparalleled arrogance.
While everyone else is undeniably guilty, one person alone recognizes Jesus’ innocence and openly admits it. He asked that Jesus “remember him” when he comes to the kingdom. Perhaps the criminal is thinking of the resurrection at the end of time when Jesus would be vindicated and raised up by God. Jesus affirms the man’s faith by reassuring him that today, in the presence of God, he will be justified (see Luke 23: 39-43).
Despite its brevity, Dallas masterfully captures the core components of faith: a sincere recognition of one’s own shortcomings and a total dependence on and unwavering belief in Jesus Christ as the ultimate savior. The film is available for viewing on the Amazon Prime streaming service.
