Music Monday: “Then Christ Came” by MercyMe

by: Debbie Waltz

“Who do you say I am?”

This is a question every person asks themselves when they first encounter Jesus in the Bible. Depending on how we choose to answer, it can shape our view of God and influence our relationship with Him.

  1. Do we see him just as a great preacher?
  2. A man who simply performs miracles
  3. A prophet?
  4. Or the Son of God and our only Savior from sin?

A Critical Question

In Matthew 16:13-20, while speaking to his disciples, Jesus posed this very important and thought-provoking question. Peter answered Jesus correctly, recognizing Him as the Messiah, God’s only Son.

But the first and most important thing is to answer who is Jesus? Once you have trusted Him as your Lord and Savior, there remain more questions.

The Christian Journey

I understand if you’re still figuring things out; there are many tough questions. 40 years in, and I’m still learning as a Christian. God the Father gives us the knowledge we need to know Who Jesus is (Matthew 16:19) and then to walk on our Christian journey.

The key to our journey lies in persistent learning and in maintaining a steadfast reliance on God’s guidance and support. We must place our trust in God, believing that he will help us cultivate and mature our faith over time. After all, this is more than a RELIGION we are talking about IT’S A RELATIONSHIP. Just as with any successful relationship, a significant investment of time dedication is crucial for fostering a meaningful bond. True, it requires work on our part, but we are not alone in this effort.

In their song “Then Christ Came,” the band MercyMe powerfully portrays the transformative impact of Jesus’s work, emphasizing how He changes our very hearts. Enslaved by our sinful nature, we lived without freedom or purpose. Because of Christ’s redeeming work, we have been set free and are now guided toward a life filled with meaning and purpose, a life that is both significant and deeply fulfilling. Because our hearts overflow with gratitude for what Christ has done for us, we are driven to serve as his ambassadors to a broken world that desperately needs the hope we have found in him.

As many of you know, I watch The Chosen. Anyway I wanted to share their interpretation of this passage because I was so touched by it. I believe their performance was impeccable and perfectly embodied the intended meaning and emotion. Although Shahar Isaac is portraying his character while speaking to Jonathan, I distinctly sense that he’s subconsciously communicating with Jesus, indicated by his chest-tapping, as if reminding himself of the true subject of his conversation, leading me to question whether this subtle gesture was scripted or spontaneous.
