Music Monday: “I Believe You” by Megan Woods

With less than a week before Thanksgiving, I am surprised to say I’m already decorating for Christmas. It runs in the family; my mother shares this trait as well. My mother and I find great joy in the simple act of holiday decorating, which allows us to fully embrace the spirit of the holidays. This also provides an opportunity to decorate before the holiday shopping season becomes hectic. Amidst all the decorating and ongoing festivities, it is important to remember the holiday’s true meaning.

Thanksgiving shares this characteristic as well. With its placement just before two of the most popular holidays, this event often gets overlooked. For instance, an older couple from my church doesn’t want to put up decorations too early because it f for eels like it’s jumping from one holiday to the next, which prevents us from appreciating the moment and showing our thanks.

I’m thinking I agree. Christmas commemorates the start of God’s plan to save humanity, but Thanksgiving is a time for our response. Are we sincerely taking the time to reflect on our life’s path and show our appreciation for the favors bestowed upon us by God? It’s simple to express these sentiments when everything is going well, but what about when challenges arise? In moments of despair, we often think the worst, believing that God has abandoned us, causing us to revert to our old ways and attempt to handle everything on our own. But 1 Thessalonians 5:16- 8 reminds us, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (NIV). This verse encourages us to turn our attention away from what we are currently experiencing and instead to contemplate God’s unwavering faithfulness and loving-kindness towards us. Subsequently, a transformation happens in our thought processes, motivating us to pattern our lives in accordance with Christ’s example, emphasizing enduring principles, and identifying what truly matters.

While this might not bring about an immediate transformation in our situation, it signifies a transformation in our way of thinking about it. Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ”

Megan Woods’ song “I Believe You” serves as a kind of proclamation, expressing the desire to maintain faith in the presence of God, even when facing moments of uncertainty. Because she has faith that God is in control, she continues to persevere, trusting that all events will ultimately align with God’s will.
