Music Monday: “His Mercy Is More” by Kristyn and Keith Getty

By: Debbie Waltz

In recent months, I’ve offered my insights on our church’s examination of the book of Hebrews. In this book, we observe the author’s encouragement of early Christians to stay strong in their faith, holding fast to the truths they believed in, even when suffering religious persecution. Even though he understands their struggles, he stresses the importance of a relationship with Jesus over simply obeying Jewish traditions and laws.

First, we began by examining how Jesus is a key part of this relationship.  Throughout his entire 3-year ministry, Jesus cared about people. He cared not only about their physical health but also about their spiritual health. He is more concerned about the condition of our hearts (and Israel’s) and whether we return to the Father. Nowhere is this evident than with his ultimate deed of self-sacrifice. Through the sacrifice of His life on the cross, He fulfilled the roles of both our High Priest and our substitutionary atonement. He also nullified the outdated covenant with his people, which subsequently eliminated the requirement for animal sacrifices.

As Christians, we still have some responsibilities to fulfill. Just like any other relationship, effort is required to make it work. Our new faith in Christ as our Savior should encourage us to act, reflecting on our past (born into sin) and appreciating the free gift God gave us. As Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, ” For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. ” (NIV)

Our deeds show our changed hearts, but we must remember that God is ultimately in control. This is the point at which faith’s influence begins. Hebrews 11:6 states, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (NIV). The passage isn’t about a type of knowledge that is acquired without active participation. It demands a dedicated quest for information and ongoing learning regarding God and His plan for your life.

Starting the week with Keith and Kristyn Getty’s song is perfect. This song perfectly encapsulates the Gospels and reminds us of God’s boundless mercy when we fail or feel unworthy.
